Has anyone seen a leak from the slip yoke plug in an 89-96 6-speed? If so, how did you correct it?
Yours isn't the first. You're sure it's 'spline seepage' to the plug? The plug can be replaced and purchased locally OR Spicer direct. When installing slip-yoke back to the ZF use the GM (specialty) lube and you're likely fixed.
Do you know that it's a correct GM/OE ZF slip-yoke? A TH400 ain't the same. Why do the 'splines seep'?
GM# 12345879 is the original product. It was expensive! If you know a GM Service Tech who does drive-line he likely has a can on his bench. You don't need but a couple of 'swipes' of the stuff.
Others have done differently! I've a friend who might just use the GM Lubricant if it was in other than a C4.
It's the original tranny/yoke, with 34k miles. Most of the leaky oil evidence on the tunnel appears a couple of inches behind the tailshaft seal, so I'm assuming it's the yoke plug. The tailshaft bushing is well within spec at 006", and the seal surface on the yoke looks good.
Yeah, I'm swapping the original rear end with a new one with 4.30 gears. Discovered an oily mess at the tailshaft when removing the c-beam. Car didn't drip on the garage floor, so it must be a very small leak, but the c-beam and yoke were soaked with oil.
Btw, how does the gm grease mitigate a leaky yoke plug?
I was quite careful NOT to say IT WILL!! I mentioned a plug and when reinstalling use the Synthetic product!! I told you what I suspect a friend would do if it weren't a C4!
Out of the car, stand vertical and just fill with oil or ATF or whatever! Slip-yoke will either leak OR NOT!!
There's enough info out there on the WWW... so you can do your own research! I won't toss an 'opinion piece' at you!!!
Link doesn't work, but I'll give it a shot if I can track some down. I'm in a time crunch so I may have to resort to a little epoxy or silicone sealant on the outside of the plug.

That wasn't intended to be a link. Don't know what I might have done!
So NOW you're in a 'HURRY'?? It's maybe 1:30 out there, you should be back home by 5:00!!
If I were in a hurry I might stuff a Viton O-Ring into the slip-yoke after a clean with thinner or Acetone, some epoxy? Assemble with GM Synthetic!
