Default Question for Hooker Header Users

Hooker has made it to my short list of header manufacturers, along with LPE's new stainless offering.

The question is "Does placing the O2 sensor in the exhaust tube for the #7 cylinder make all that much difference than being in the collector"?

I know that when placed in the collector, it should average the exhaust gases from the entire bank of cylinders, but it practical terms is it significant?

What do you think, and what have you done?

Yes it does matter! Do your self a favor and put it in the collector. If you want to take it to the next level. Replace the O2 sensors with heated O2 sensors.

You'll certainly want heated sensors and it's best to put them in the collector.

Thats what I thought you guys would say.

How badly does it scew up the coating to weld the bung in the collector?

Well I've done it, so I'll tell ya' the first thing you need to do is take a dotco & grind the ceramic coating off in the area you will weld. I've got a heli-arc & I could not even start a puddle on top of the stuff at 150 amps. You don't have to grind an area too much larger than the hole. About an 1/8"-1/4" around the hole you will be welding the bung into will do it. You can touch it up with some high heat silver header paint down there & no one will know the difference.

It depends on the coating really. I didn't see it done, but I had a bung welded in mine and it didn't mess up the coating at all. The actual weld has some slight surface rust but the header itself is still fine. The only place the coating is screwed up is right under the weld. The coating immediately around the weld is still perfectly intact.

Sounds like a plan. Don't suppose there's any other gotcha's with the installation. For the price these are the ticket - don't know why hooker doesn't put the bung in the right place to begin with

Thanks guys....

What if you put the bung just where the exhaust pipe begins, just after the collector? Then you don’t have to worry about the coating. I suppose you would need a heated O2 sensor then...? :p:

Putting it in there is a thought.......

I'll believe I need a heated sensor regardless, so the extra distance down in the exhaust stream shouldn't matter.

A heated sensor will work fine there, but you will have one more place an exhaust leak could occur prior to the o2 sensor, and the closed loop PCM feedback won't tolerate an exhaust leak prior to the o2 sensors, it causes the o2's to provide a false reading to the PCM. The 02's see a lean Cond & the PCM comps by adding fuel. Just another thing to consider... :)

Didn't think of that!! But if I make sure that there is no leak perhaps it may work.... I don’t want to "destroy" my coating.

I am planning to put LT headers on my beast, but not right now. I am going to add them at the end of next year.

Question: What will heated sensors give me in the grand scheme of things? What is the difference? (aside from it being warmer, duh!)

How much do they cost (O2 sensors)? Where do I get them? I will be doing this project long term, next year this time.

Do this.

Take your old non-heated O2 sensor and screw it into the sensor bung on #7. Weld a new bung into the collector and install the heated ($100) O2 sensor into the new bung. Only hook up the heated one and use the old one as a plug for the whole. :)
