Out of curiousity wondering at what generation/year the metric system was applied to the Corvette. I'm thinking it was the C4. I'm changing axle universals and most videos call for a 5/16" socket for C4 retainer strap bolts, my '93 has 8mm, 5/16" socket slips, surprised the video guys could use them.

I know that some of the earlier c4s had SAE bolt heads with metric threads. This holds true for my 1991

I’m sure this if the above comment is mistaken I’ll quickly be hung by the forum self proclaimed gurus for posting a mistake on the internet.

You basically need one tool of every possible kind on a C4.

my 1972 lt-1 c3 is all standard bolts. i took apart a 1978 c3 years ago and it had both standard and metric bolts. if i remember right, the engine/transmission/diff was standard and body bolts were metric.

5/16 is almost exactly 8mm. But yeah the c4 has both and it makes me crazy sometimes even though I’ve been working on it for 20 years. It adds “character” to the car.

Metric fasteners crept in during the late 70's. Mostly on the body and newly designed assemblies. The C4 is nearly all metric although the SBC never went fully metric. Standard and metric are units of measure it's unavoidable the there will be distances that will be extremely close so sockets will interchange. GM did adopt the 10, 13,15, 18 to force DIYers to buy extra tools. I has seen old tool sets where sockets and wrenches were graduated in 32's matching nearly all metric sizes.
