I'm looking for a set of headers for an L98 engine, it's an 89 vette. I'm leaning towards a set of Hookers but if anybodies got any other suggestions or tips I would greatly appreciate it
These are TPIS headers and Y-pipe. They are $$ ($750) but they are a direct bolt on. I was willing to pay the extra couple hundred bucks for an install that would be a nice fit without any jury rigging. Other than moving the fuel lines a bit I had no problems installing.
Hookers. I have them in my 85 vette. No clearance problems what so ever. I have read that TPIS was having a problem with there coating. With the money you have by buying the hookers you can get a Mini starter with a heat shield. You should relly think about going a mini starter for many reason. 1, No more heat soak, wires are farther away from headers, No need to drop the header to change the starter, More tourqe, lighter, better.
The 88-91 vette used the mini starter. That or a Tilton would be the way to go..
Ya gotta love that price - the only issue with the Hookers is the location of the O2 sensor. I'm trying to decide which ones to buy right now and leanig towards the Hooker because of price. If you're considering the TPIS headers, take a look at the LPE stainless ones. They cost about $50 more than TPIS. In my opinion the I'd rather buy the Hooker than the TPIS because they are pretty much the same in construction, but if you want to spend $800 than I'd get the LPE.
I had no problems installing them. Just had to remove the starter. You can easily change you plugs with the Hooker headers. But on the other hand I do not have any experience of the TPIS.
If you do get the hookers make sure thet the bolt on the passenger side motor mount is not even close to the #4 Primary. I had to reverse the motor mount bolt.

:smash: You got THAT right. Factor in the cost for a heated O2 Sensor (which you should be buying ANYWAY) and relocating it to the driver's side collector and the Hookers aren't as cheap as they'd initially appear.
I got the set with the EGR stuff on it and the Passenger side header was a biyatch to drop in. I think I'll be lopping off and capping the EGR tube if the headers have to come out again. (It's pretty much an appendix part anyway, the Chip has all EGR function programmed out.)
I'd also recommend Stage-8 bolts in addition to the mini-starter that's been mentioned previously...
I have a pair of Hookers on my 95 LT1 my opinion is :
1 it take about 4 hours to change the two side.
2 you need to change the bolts (if not it's difficult to fix the bolts of cylinder n° 8 and 7).
3 you have to protect with self adhesiv asbestos the temp. sensible area
4 the result is an engine that go faster to 6000 RPM and the feeling of better torque.
I was thinking of a set of headers for my LT-1. Did you have to make any mods for the collecter? I was thinking on just useing the stock manifolds but how much does it rob on HP??
Can headers be dropped in topside, or would I have to get the car up on ramps to get them from the bottom? Also, I understand that an O2 bung has to be welded in. Is that a specific part or is it just a standard nut welded in?
TPIS recommended getting the car 25" off the ground. That is not necessary. I drove the front of the car on ramps (real ramps, not rhino ramps) and put the back of the car on jackstands.
