Hello, I'm new to the forum. Purchased a 87 over the winter and surprise... surprise the Digital Dash was not working. I sent it out to be repaired (cost me mucho $$$) plugged it back in and worked for a little while but blanked out again shortly after. Brought back to the shop that fixed it only to be told that it works fine when they bench tested it. Was told that it was a bad ground connection so I tapped into a new ground for ground wires D1/D3/B1. Plugged it in again and it worked fine for the day. Next day went to turn it on, and once again it blanked out. Unplugged it again from wire connector and reconnected it and it would work(for a little while). I'm thinking there is a bad connection from the pins to the wire connector. Has anyone had an issue like this? Not sure what else to do. Is there a way I can test each wire in the wire connector?
I had some similar problems, starting with my Speedometer very intermittent. I think I traced every wire in the damn thing!
Then I did the one thing I didn't want to do. I removed each terminal in the cluster plug and lightly bent the 3 sides in, making a tight fit.
Took a couple of hours but well worth it. Every thing works and hasn't given any issues in 5000 miles.
See the picture. It shows where I reformed each terminal.
Before you go too far,
start your car and read volts at the battery.
if the volts are too high, you may be having problems with the light bulb dimmer.
it may allow the bulb dimmer to get hot and shut off, making u think its not working
My 84 did the same thing and thought WTF! After driving around for a week thinking it was done I reached up and tapped the dash and BAM! lights back on and have been on ever since. Guess I'm just lucky.
hmm interesting Thanks for the tip. When car when runings is at around 14.5 volts. I don't think that is too high... is it? Also, not sure if they are connected are not but when my l head lights are on my left turn signal indicator on dash cluster remain lit at all time.
