I am trying to hook up a new positive battery cable on my 96 and cannot find out where the wires run too. I traced the wire that is supposed to connect to the starter but it seems that it runs back towards the transmission. Is this correct? Maybe it loops back behind the trans but without a manual i am lost. Could someone check for me? THanks in advance! I thought this would be a simple job but it looks like a nightmare!
Is it possible that there could be some sort of relay to the starter from inside of the car. I was reading old posts and they said in some years that there was a relay behind the radio, but these were 8o's vettes. Guys please help, i am getting very discouraged.
Thanks for trying "OLDMAN". The reason for replacing was that battery acid had corroded the bolt as well as the wiring, forcing me to have to cut the battery out. Therefore i now have a major chore on my i think!
Don't know if this will be of any help as it is for an LT1. The cable (pos) runs around the back of the engine, over the trans, & then down to the starter.

My son had to replace the starter in his '92 coupe - we had it rebuilt and the technican (who really knows his stuff... been in business 28 years!) told us that the end of the cable that connects to the starter was in bad (corrouded) shape and should be replaced.
We bought a GM replacement cable and its on the list of things to do while the car is in storage this winter. However, it does NOT look like an easy job. We have the "Big Red Books" (GM Service Manuals) and from what they show in pics/diagrams, the postive cable enters a wire loom and runs down under everything (brake resevoir, etc) and dissapears! The wire loom runs along the firewall (according to the book there is at least one (1) cable mount on the firewall, then the wire loom routes back to the engine, under the exhaust manifold (above the cat) and to the starter. The book shows the wire loom clamped to another loom just under the rear corner of the exhaust manifold.
We've looked at this trying to figure out just how difficult it would be to replace and believe me, we can't even see the cable when it "dissapears" at the back of the engine to the firewall, so we're assuming it isn't going to be pretty! :smash:
A local GM dealership (who generally has excellent prices - quoted me $134 to do it (nearly 2 hours labor - I supply the cable). The Mgr told me he had replaced a cable on a '93 and the tech said it was terrible to do.
Someone mentioned (in a prior post) to use rope to pull the cable through but if it is indeed clamped to the firewall, that isn't going to happen easily! I would be VERY interested to hear on the success of your attempt to replace your cable... :yesnod:
You got it exactly right! It was hard to follow that wire even with the engine OUT of my car.
OMG
Just when my knuckles have healed from working on my F150 heater!
I can't wait to tell my son the good news!! :nonod:
My son (who is in his first year of college) is anxious to meet you - he calls you "The Authority" on the forum... we live in North-Central Worcester County. I think he'll try to hook up with you next Spring just to say hi or pay a visit to Epping the next time your up there.
