I have a question for you folks. I just drove my car for the first time in a few days. Once I reach 3000rpms the engine just seems to cut out severly. This is to the point that it won't even climb in rpm's anymore. It seems that above the 3000 rpm point the timing is all jumbled or something.
I have new plugs, wires and opti. I'm starting to think that it may be the MSD ignition. The MSD box rests in the passengers side nose area under the headlight assembly. The night before last we recieved a heavy storm, if this ignition box got wet enough could it cause this cutting out at 3000rmps and above?
Wow that is a tough one. Its tough to say, do you hear backfiring at all through the exhaust? Sounds to me like its an electrical problem, any codes. Check at night or in a dark garage, for sparks jumping around. I have to instances, one was with a BRAND new set of SP wires. It had a spall pinhole, you can check them this way if your brave. I just ran my hand over the wires till, you nearly get knocked on your butt (thats the hole/problem) the other time the insulation on the SP itself was cracked, it was arching out from under the SP wire boot to the block. Both cases the car ran like crap, I tried to pass a 95 yr old lady in a oldmobile and she gave me a run for my money  She's probably still at her card club telling stories.
Also can you unhook the MSD and try just the stock ign, to see if it helps?
You are right, I need to reconnect the old ignition and see if the problem still persists. As far as backfiring through the exhaust, it doesn't sound much like a backfire. The odd thing is that it runs fine till 3000rpms, after that it just hits a wall!
First thing I would do is unhook the MSD...Also you may have a weak Fuel pump that just can't keep up after 3k. Do you have a fuel pressure guage...it would be worth taping it to the wind shield to see if the pressure is dropping off. Its an easy test, but will eliminate many items.
Then you can start working on sending those wheels.
This sounds too obvious but I will say it anyway. Does the msd have a rev limiter switch? maybe it got wet and happens to think it is set at 3000. THe fact that it doesn't backfire make me think it is doing rev limiting. I think the digital msd fires every other cylinder in rev limit mode.

You know...you may have a point there! That's exactly what it seems to be doing. I never thought of that.

DING. DING, DING. We have a winner! Thanks brookman, that was the problem. I went and turned the rev limiter off and problem solved (atleast for now)!
