I am new to this forum, sorry if this has already been covered but I did not see it the old stuff. I have a 85 Vette and want to install the 2149 Hooker headers. I was planning on using the 16720 Y pipe by welding on a flange to bolt up to the converter. How high do you have to lift the car to get the headers installed. Hooker says 36 in. Is that true. Can it be done on jack stands? Are there any mods needed to install these?
I've got the same setup on my 85. I put mine on using jack stands and I'm sure I wasn't 36 inches up. I did remove the front wheels for access. The headers went on pretty smoothly, but the starter was a bit of a problem. Clearance there was tight. I had to do some bending of the brake lines to get more separation from the pipes themselves. I also used some aluminumized heat shielding cloth from Pep-Boys or Autozone to cover the lines just for insurance. I had a Midas place mate up my new Hooker Y pipe to the cat flange. They used their pipe resizer and then welded the joint. Came out really nice for $20.00. I do have a larger gap on the left side than the right where the Y pipe meets the headers. But I filled it with 3 soft aluminum header gaskets. I think the gap difference is because I have aftermarket heads. I would suggest investing in Stage 8 locking header bolts. Not necessarily because they loosen, but for the ability to use a box/oe wrench or allen when putting the bolts in. The one at the firewall on the pass side took me a really long time. Talk about small spaces. Have fun.
Welcome aboard!! :seeya I did mine on jack stands. And its a 85 also. Here is what i would do, Get you a starter out of a 88-91 vette, They are called mini starter. This way you wont have a problem with heat soaking and your wires will be easier to move out of the way from the headers. And you wount have to remove the Pass side header to change the starter if it ever goes bad.
And on the passanger side the motor mount bolt has to be turned around so the the bolt wont rub a hole in the #4 Primary. And the flange on your old Y pipe can be welded with no problems.
I will be going to the mufller shop here in a few, I will post some pictures.
