1996 Stereo Replacement Issue after Issue
I didnt see much C4 activity in the electronics section so I figured I would try posting this here.
I just installed a new Alpine head unit and the problems just keep mounting. I used a metra 70-1857 bypass harness to retain the Bose speakers and amps.
The bypass harness is really pretty simplistic and thought this would be an easy install.
Before running the wires permanently I tested everything hooked up sitting in the hatch. Instantly noticed the popping when powering on or off, changing sources, etc.
I found a few threads here and followed them, I installed a high to low level converter to eliminate the popping. Everything worked great sitting in the trunk.
I ran the harness and installed the head unit in the dash. I am now getting buzzing engine off key on, its worse when the ignition or headlights are on.
When the engine is running I get alternator whine. If I ground the head unit to another chassis ground the noises get better. I am now thinking about installing a ground loop isolator.
It seems like the head unit is picking up dash controller noises?
Anyone have these issues and have a solution?

However you are lucky that I hoard emails and went back to the shipping notice from Crutchfield. You will need 2 PAC-SN1's to be in between the radio and the Bose components.
Also you did wire the Bose speakers to the NON-AMPLIFIED side, correct ?

Here I found it for you

It took me many hours of searching the web to find out about the SN1's. Other folks crossed this bridge before I did and I was fortunate that they posted about it for me to find.

Interesting that the ground loop Isolators took care of the popping noise, I used the high to low converters instead. The high to low converters eliminated the popping but could be the source of my noise. I will order some of the ground loop isolators and see what happens. Where did you connect the ground loop ground wire?
Im not sure what you mean by "Also you did wire the Bose speakers to the NON-AMPLIFIED side, correct ?" I used the metra harness to connect my head unit. The harness comes with RCA connectors at the head unit, the other end plugs directly into the factory harness going to the individual speaker amps. I didnt modify the speaker wires or the connections at the factory haness.

What I meant by non-amplified side, is, on the radio that I installed, there were 2 sets of outputs. The radio I used had an internal amplifier, hence the "amplified or non-amplified" sides.
With the Bose system being amplified at the speaker, you only need a low power signal to them, ie: the non-amplified side. So if your radio has an internal amp of some degree, you need to be plugged into the non-amp'ed output side.
I tried a lot of different solutions until I found out about the PAC-SN1's.
If you look at the conversion kit that Zip Corvette offers, you will see a green box

I think that they are using a "line output converter" to limit the power going to the Bose amps. I could be wrong as to what that green box is.

Anyway, thank you for the recommendation on the PAC-SN1's. I got them installed today and all my issues are gone! New stereo sounds great. No popping or engine noise of any kind.
Finally, I got the Alpine bumpin.
