i was searching for the '85 4+3 neutral safety switch - to be aware of where it is and kinda what it is - just in case the problem is not my starter - my manual shows one part attached to the clutch pedal - but it doesn't look like one of the images i found on here that someone jumpered to bypass it to see if it was the culprit in their no start situation
i found
looks like this part
not my pedal but looks like this connection with the yellow and green wire
when searching here i found this other connection described as the switch which then made me think i may be looking at the wrong part
does anyone know which is the infamous clutch neutral safety switch that will not allow the car to start?
You are going to go in circles until you get the proper terminology.
neutral safety switch is used on automatics and is on the shifter in the center console.
clutch safety switch is on the clutch pedal and makes when the pedal is depressed to the floor.
pull the plug off the switch, put the hand brake on, put it in neutral and jumper the switch with a paper clip and it should start.
thanks - so the clutch pedal position switch will have nothing to do with this? - i ask because what i see is the cylindrical piece attached to the clutch pedal and goes down to a plug that is green and yellow - thicker wires than the purple and yellow - i will take another look
The image in # 4 isn't correct for an '85. I'd suggest you become more/better familiar with you '85 FSM and solicit help/aid from an '85 owner that's been there and done what you going to attempt. I'm amazed that when you first anticipated maybe a POS cable replacement that while there you didn't evacuate all of this prior to it's buy. A question? Where was the POS cable purchased from? If you determined now that your replacing starter, that cable length can be critical.
Your first post in this thread, image #1 is correct for a '85 and image #3 is a correct image of connector and wire colors. Look for nothing other than that 'unless' at some point yours was modified.
You actually haven't yet diagnosed the original problem?
**You've got three some what related threads - take a break and sort it your self.
'85 FSM Electrical Diagrams page 151 Figure 1 could be very useful.
thanks - i do appreciate the help - as only moderately mechanically inclined i am afraid that i do rely often on the help and suggestions here - i did finally find this in the fsm and am learning to follow it a little more - i have much to learn with this and agree that i sometimes follow suggestions here quickly in an attempt to figure things out - maybe too quickly - i wondered about the purple and yellow - as all that i found was the green and yellow as seen on the rusty pedal - fairly easy to reach- honestly in some cases i do not trust myself in what i see in the manual and ask extra stupid questions as i am trying to learn from those with experience -
i ended up getting.a delco wire from zip - because i thought it was going to be correct - i am - at this point - hoping it all somehow comes together - without screwing too much up -
i again cannot state enough the appreciation i have for everyone here that take the time to help novices (sometimes moron may be more appropriate) like myself that cannot take a step back and approach things more patiently
i am going to try to jumper that to see if it will start before tearing anything else apart -

Spend more time with Electrical Diagnosis pages #117 and #118. There's pretty complete trouble shooting info there that with a good POS cable and a 'charged battery' you should be able to accomplish. Check all grounds also should be included!
I jumpered mine years ago. That switch is so far up under the dash, you'd need tiny little arms and hands to try and get at it. Leave it jumpered and forget about replacing that switch. Not worth the aggravation.
