Default Z-51 question

How do I tell if my 1985 Vette has the Z-51 suspension if the label is gone from my compartment door? What does this option consist of besides spring rate?

Z51 cars have 2 to 2.25 turns lock to lock a non 51 car is 2.75
Z51 car has a bigger air dam under the front, it also has a radiator boost fan on the front of the radiator
Those are the most obvious things to look for

All of the major components of the Z51 were also available seperately. The additional fan (got the bigger air dam), oil cooler, Bilstein shocks, etc. The easiest way to tell a Z51 car is the number of turns lock to lock. That said, a number of people have replaced the orginal rack&pinion with a Z51 rack. Supposedly there were subframe structural components on the Z51 cars that were not available otherwise. Someone on the forum posted a picture of the added supports once.

Other than that, pull the build sheet from the top of the gas tank or request one from the museum.

You should be able to run your VIN #.

I can't remember the web site that gives you the info but I know it exists.

Can someone chime in and give the WWW.

In addition to the steering ratio, seperately available options (bilstein, HD radiator, boost fan and engine oil cooler)

You can also tell by the lower control arms, they should be stamp with Z51 (again can be replaced)

You should also have the 3.07:1 gear ratio and 16 x 9.5" rims (stamped on the inside face of each rim)

The sway bars are also larger (off the top of my head 300,, front and 24mm rear)

If you have all of the above part or are missing one part or two that may have been replaced I would assume you have the Z51 package.

Some above mention about chasis stiffeners. These were not added into the z51 package until 1987

Do you have a source for this information?

Somehow I thought I remembered that the picture was of an 84 Z51, could be wrong.

I didn't know about the lower control arms and forgot about the sway bars. My 86 is a FE1 and has all of the above original except springs, sway bars and control arms. I think the sum of the parts was greater than what the Z51 option cost.

The 87&88 Z51 & Z52 car got some of the chasis stiffener that the convertible recieved (They never had the x brace) All 89 up cars recieved these.

I will look into my part manual to see if their were any early chasis stiffeners.
