I seem to remember seeing a post about using an aftermarket 350 cu in fluid damper on a 383 with success to fit a 383 in a C4 frame without having to do any mods  but i cannot find a link.
Has anyone got any info about this, i have been offered a zz4 based 383 short motor but it is externally balanced so as i do not intend to do anything with my frame and i don't want to use the bigger damper i would have to get it internally balanced if this is not possible. why ?? because i don't want anyone to know its a 383 ;)
If you have the money any thing is possible, but why fight it! I would go with the externally balenced ( 400) damper And dont let them look under the hood! :smash:
Sorry but you can't use a 350 dampner on an externaly ballenced engine. You will need a dampner for a 400ci. as far as being able to see the difference the weight is inbetween the engine and tranny. You couldn't see it anyway. Summit racing has a great deal on a 400 dampner that is almost the same size as a 350 dampner. As far as fitting if a 350 can be bolted into a car then a 383 can without any cutting.
Hope this helps
How are you building a internaly ballenced 383? Is it an LT1? I don't know a lot about LT1s but with anything else I can tell you that a 383 crank is externaly ballanced and you will need a dampner for a 400 cid.

a good machine shop can internally balance for you....my understanding is that they take the assembly, assemble it and check for out of "roundness" of the rotation.....then they chunk off parts of the crank to fix that!
Most all 383 internaly balanced cranks are for 6 inc rods because the counter weights have to weigh more then a crank that is externaly balanced you can get a 3.75 crank for a 5.7 rods balanced to be internaly balanced but you have to put a lot of mallory in the counter weights and that will cost you, it will cost you $250-$400 to have it done.
I guess you learn something new everyday. I have never heard of that before. But my question is why? By the sounds of it the internal ballance 383 would cost a lot more and would not give any benifit over external except you get to use a 350 dampner, and like you said they are only $60.
