I'm pulling the steering rack on my 95 LT1 I have all the bolts taken loose and the hoses and the steering shaft. I removed the sway bar as well. What is the trick to getting this out of the frame cradle where the through bolt goes? I can't slide it to the left or right and there doesn't seem to be room to slide it up and out of the frame cradle either. Figured I would ask before I start breaking things.....
Thanks for the response! I'll take another look in the morning and see if it's possible. When I tried earlier it seemed like the tubular external lines were hitting before I could get it high enough.
Yes, if it is the same as my '87, it will come out the drivers side. If I remember correctly, once I knocked it loose toward the drivers side, we just simply had to rotate it a little to clear coming out.
Unfortunately, I don't have any in progress pics of the removal. But, this is what it should look like after you get it clear.
I got it pulled this morning. Apparently my downfall was not removing the line from the ps pump and getting it completely out of the way. Once it was out, I was able to raise that end of the rack enough to free it. Thanks for the help guys!
When you reinstall it you will probably have to use a piece of tape to hold one of the nuts in place that is hidden in a housing while starting the bolt, IIRC. I could have used a pair of helping hands but was able to get it by myself. Patience is mandatory.
I agree with others (massive job) and wish you the best. AND............. A "pat on the back" for all the folks helping. A bunch of super nice folks here willing to share their experience and information.
