Default Coil for a new MSD 8366 distributor.

Hi,
I'm going to replace my old Jacobs ignition system. I already bought the MSD 6AL and the MSD 8366 distributor. Now, I'm not sure which coil do I need?
The Blaster 3 (8223) or MSD 8225 with the MSD 8876 harness?
Thank you.

Hello again Yariv!

I would buy one that mounts to the fire-wall and is more expensive than the round can one that looks like a standard Coil (#8223). On my C3 with its 427 I have been running the MSD system since 1992. The only part I have had to replace is the COIL and I am on my 3rd one right now. The guys at MSD told me that I need a Coil Number 8252 or at least the 8228 which are both much more expensive. The bigger more expensive coils put out a healthy spark but cost more and last longer. The folks at MSD said that one of these coils will last years compared to the canister oil filled type. I have a hard time spending a lot of money for a coil but it seems that will be what I do next time. BTW the coils all died randomly "out of the blue" with no warning at all. Makes me want to carry a spare coil on trips...

I have a MSD tach drive Distributor, MSD 6 AL Box, MSD Digital Retard, MSD coil and spark plug wires on the 427 and it needs the high energy ignition with 12.25-1 compression. When I bought mine a buddy who owned a Speed shop took my new MSD and cleaned it up, he said the curve was not the right one for my 427. He was not a big supporter of MSD however so I am not sure it was really "Off" when it was built. The reason for the Digital Retard Box was for letting me pull timing while cranking the engine. It would pull 20* timing which unloads the starter big time and lets it crank faster, I did this before the gear drive starter I installed.

My only concern is that I have personally seen a reduction in quality of the recent MSD spark Plug wires. They arc everywhere in my engine compartment and not all the energy is getting to the Spark. I have not been impressed with the wires.

My only suggestion is to buy the higher end MSD coils and avoid the #8223 altogether, this way the coil you choose should last longer and you might not get stranded someplace!

Good Luck!

Thank you for your detailed response. The issue is I already ordered 8223. I'm not sure that I can use it with the 8366 for my 1985 or I must have the 8225 coil + 8876 harness combo...I assume your C3 is out of our league.

Why was the original ignition system removed?

I got the Vette about 6 years ago. It already had the Jacob's ignition.

After further research it seems 8876 harness is irrelevant for my 1985. Holley sells an harness for the 8366 distributor:

It also seems the coil itselft is irrelevant too (blaster3 or 8226).
