Default exhaust manifold comparison

Here is a set of 85 manifolds ( without shields) I smoothed out a little and installed compared to my set of 89s I just took off.
The 89s are really smaller and shaped different, I believe I made an improvement.
I also installed with out the shields.

Looks like 89s, although more compact looks like they flow much higher volume.

I welded the outside(around the tubes at the flange), then ground the ID out to match the heads for both my sets. Not a huge gain but diy stuff can add up.

Just curious but the area of the openings on the 89 manifolds look substantially larger than the ones you put on. How do they match the heads when the 89‘s do seem so much larger?

on the 89, I think you are seeing the soot print from the D port on the head throw off the manifold inlet shape. If you brighten it you can see they're both about the same... at least to my eyes. The exhaust mismatch on the later l98s is pretty noticeable.

LT1 manifolds are definitely bigger, why not just use them?

fat sloppy weld can be grinded at the collector side. my math says gain of 15-20 cfm. it will flow the same as stock heads
