Coolant temp high while sitting
light, it jumps up to 233 degrees. Granted the lack of airflow will cause it to
rise but I have the electric cooling fan and an aux fan to help. The max temp
is 255 degrees according to the manual. What is the threhsold for the fan to come on and could my thermostat be going bad? I have stopped by the roadside to see if the fan is running and it isn't. I did see the aux fan run
but that was only when I had the AC on. It's pretty cool in DFW. I shouldn't have high temperatures unless the car is designed that way.
It tells the fan switch to turn on.You can buy different temp ranges for this sendor.
The fan switch or relay is located on the drivers fender well near the battery.
You should be able to figure out the problem by grounding the wire to the sensor.& by hot wireing the fans to locate the problem.
I hope the 89 is similar.
The car is designed to run that hot though. But you should see the fans come on at 233.

Main fan is controlled by the ECM and will come on around 220*, if the AC is on (given sufficient freon pressure), or if the A and B terminals on the ALDL are connected.
Aux fan is controlled by the aux fan switch (looks like a coolant sensor) in the drivers side head between #1 and #3 cylinders. AC will not cause the aux fan to run on an 89. The aux fan switch grounds the aux fan relay (on fan shroud) around 228* on the 89.
If you are getting over 220* or so in cool weather suggest you pull the radiator and clean it and the space between the radiator and condensor. If you want lower temperatures, do a search there are sever good ways to get the fans on earlier. But first you need a well functioning cooling system and a clean radiator!
