I have an 86 coupe. My right side headlight sometimes doesn't go on. They both flip up with no problem. I have checked the wiring. I wanted to know what the third relay does in the front driver's side does? I am assuming one is the left and the other is the right but; what does the third one do? Also, could someone tell me which one is the left and right?
The third is an 'isolation relay' that the left and right motor relays receive 'instructions' from.
You'll likely find 10031018 on two relays, those are L & R, the 3d is likely 10039961 if original. Order on the bracket? I believe that when servicing they can get mixed.

I'm assuming then that if the headlight goes up and down without a problem. The relays are working properly. My problem is the right headlight sometimes doesn't go on. I tried moving the wires around to find a loose connection. It only happens once in a while. The headlight switch on the dash is new also. I never replaced any of the relays before.

thanks again
Just replace the socket next, is it high or low OR doesn't matter? Some might say it's an appropriate time to consider a headlamp change. I'd maybe consider checking voltage @ the headlamp and maybe consider a relay to power the lamps.

I never thought of trying it with high beam. I will next time. So my assumption is correct that the relays are working properly. It must an electrical connection some where at the headlight. Could it be the connector that you disconnect to remove the bucket. The one side powers the motor and the other must power the lamps.
The relays are in the headlight door circuit only and do not affect the lamps. The lamps are powered from the headlight switch to the dimmer switch to the lamps. They share the same power wire from the switch through the firewall and split to left and right under the hood. I would check the headlight and the socket. Check your ground wire also. Three wires go to the headlight. Low beam high beam and ground.
