Looking to replace my unit, but looks like it’s out of production. I see they offer the mast and ribbon gear. I removed the rubber grommet and the nut, the antenna came out easily, but without the ribbon gear, so no shortcuts in order I guess.
I presume I’ll remove the whole assembly and then take it apart as the ribbon gear is still inside the motor, then try to install this repair piece.
Anybody have some detailed directions, video of this?

 

Well if anyone is interested, I did manage to replace my antenna mast and ribbon along with a new grommet ( a must). There are several videos on you tube, but none for a 1990. Chevy made 4 different antenna’s from 1984-1996. Not all that different but different enough. They do not make a replacement power unit period, just for 84-87 I think. I did read a very old post on this forum from 2006, he pointed me in the right direction. First jack up the drivers rear, remove the tire and plastic wheel well liner and it’s easy to get to.
Just disconnect the 2small bolts on the bottom of the bracket at the base of the antenna. Disconnect the 2 ground straps and the whole unit just drops down giving you ample room.
I broke my perfectly running antenna driving under my 4 post lift with the radio on. What an idiot. I even made a reminder sign to warn me posted on the lift. Oh well. So the top third of the antenna snapped off, and a third of the ribbon. So I knew I had to drop the unit, open it up and remove the rest of the plastic ribbon. So I liberally coated the gear and circular space with white lithium grease and put the cover back on.
Then with a helpful wife operating the radio, I fed the ribbon into the antenna housing while holding the unit in the wheel well. Then reinstall it. Perfect.
So I’ll make a bigger warning sign tomorrow, and” try to keep my mind where my body is”.
