Default 3:33 axle ratio

I have 1990 , 6 speed convertible. Since owning it I’ve been very surprised with the gear ratio. You go very quickly through the first 5 gears, the rpm spools up very, very quickly it seems to me. I throughly enjoy it, no complaints . I thought I must have the G92 performance axle, but (see photo) my build sheet says 3:33. I was shocked. I thought maybe 3:07 would be the stock ratio.
In 5th gear, at 3,000 rpm I’m only going 56 mph. Again, very surprised. It’s a big difference going into 6th, definitely a highway mode.
So, if I have the standard rear axle ration for a 1990 6 speed, what would have been the “ performance axle ratio; the G92 option for $22.00 that 9,362 people ordered?

3.07 was never offered with an M6, 3.54 when introduced in '89, late '89 change to 3.33, '90 3.33 other than LT5/ZR-1 (3.45), '91 and later most are 3.45 with a few 3.54 scattered among them.

There isn't a G92 option for M6 '90.

Something wrong! With 3.33 gears, 5th gear at 3,000 rpm should be 89 mph and 56 mph should be 1,900 rpm.

http://www.pszweb.com/car/gears.htm

Delete the static tire diameter and input ~810 revolutions per mile instead for a 275/40R17 tire.

Tach error is the most likely culprit, but clutch could be slipping like crazy. Don't think you have 5.13+ gears. Double check your numbers.

G92 would've been for the A4 transmission, not the M6.

If it’s a tach error, where would I begin to look to fix?

Tach filter likely culprit, a common issue on the later L98s

There are several posts regarding tach calibration/repair here in the C4 section!

I'd think batee.com might offer the more reliable repair for most DIY now. Even Batee offered different procedures through the years.

There's a DIY video also. There are less expensive approaches for a serious DIY

https://batee.com/collections/1990-1...et-for-6k-tach

Check to confirm we're correct by using a handheld, using a scanner or if the car has C68 and the control functions properly you can check there. With the KEY ON - NOT RUNNING Does the tach park at 0?

Do you have the FSM?

Thanks guys, I just ordered one. $30.00, cheap enough, I’ll start there!

I’m looking to swap out my tach filter when it gets here Wednesday, looking online and there is a video showing removing wiper motor. Will that give me enough access to do the job or is there more to it?
