D44 with batwing weight?
Anyone have a reasonably accurate weight for a D44 pumpkin and batwing? Not selling or shipping anything, just trying to compare a couple different rear end combinations. I did a search, but didn't find any definitive information.
I can only say that when I had my D44 shipped to me, the Fastenal bill of lading said 250lbs, and trying to move that box around I'd say thats about right.
A housing, rear cover, differential, ring and pinion in a box is 80+ lb, 85 maybe. I didn't include pinion flange, short axles, bearings & small parts. There's less than 20 lb involved in those adds I'd think so if you anticipated 115 lb you'd be maybe close! This is on a basic scale that isn't used for shipping calculations.

What does the '80 - '82 weigh?
I don't have a weight for the C3 equivalent (I've got a couple C3 batings, but no aluminum differential setups).
Here's the information I have. I have a spare D36 setup on the shelf, with 70# chalk marked on it. Seems right when I lift it. I also have a D36 batwing adapted to fit the original iron differential under my '69 (this setup is lighter than using the C3 batwing or the original iron cover and steel crossmember). This "hybrid" setup weighs 96#. I was guessing that a C4 D44 equivalent should be somewhere in the middle of these two setups, perhaps in the 80-85# range.
I have a C4 suspension under my '69, but I retained the iron differential when I converted the suspension. The D44 differential housing doesn't package well in the C3 tunnel, and the C3 differentials are cheap and strong, so I kept the C3 differential. I'm very weight conscious regarding parts on my car, and I've just been curious how much lighter the C4 D44 differential is compared to the C3 iron piece I retained. It sounds like it's a 10-15# delta.

I have little confidence in the scale I used and I rounded up when weighing the components. Less than 100# is possible.
