My headlamp stopped moving half way down when I shut the car off before. Normally it stays up until I open the hood a few inches, then goes down, but this time it stayed half way up.
It makes a whimpering noise from the motor every 15 seconds or so, do I need new gears, or an entirely new motor assembly?

Re: Bad Headlight Motor? Or Stripped gears? (CarAteMyMoney)
OK, I have the light all the way up, and after turning the little dial it feels like it only works half the time so i'm assuming it's the gears.
I have no idea lol anyone have any advice?
If the light moves up and down manually, then chances are it's not the gears. If it were the gears, the manual **** wouldn't work any better than the motor.
The fact that it stops halfway and then makes a noise sounds like the limit circuitry..Like I said, there's another thread around here in the last few days that covers this

:iagree: I've had to replace the gears in the 86 twice. The first time I used the OEM style. The second time I went with the brass gears from Mid America. If the gears were bad you would be able to tell when you used the manual ****.
