My 96 had an engine failure, connecting rod thru the oil pan. I'm working under the assumption that the block won't be usable for a rebuild so I'm wondering what issues I would run into if I found a low mile 94, 95 or 97 LT1. It seems low mile versions of these years are hard to find. Will I need the ecm from the donor car or will my existing 96 ECM work. Also, what other issues would I run into?
You will need the front cover and reluctor off of your 96 to convert and earlier LT1 to work in the 96. The 96 is OBD2 Tje earlier versions are obd1 . also you need the newer drive for the opti if the donor is a spline drive. It's not difficult to do. Just take your time. If your in the North East look on FB market place. There are a bunch of guys parting out c4s.
Also there is a trigger wheel on crank. The opti drive on the 96 is different also than 92/94 I belive the 95 and 96 is the bigger drive. It's not hard to do. Just take your time..
You are a crossroads here. Buy a used LT1 and put your stuff on it and go with it. Might last a long time or not being an older motor. Or just rebuild the whole motor using the LT1 you find.
If the block turns out to be bad and you find an earlier LT1 buy it as a donor. Use the block, crank, and rods. Get it all machined and new pistons on the rods. Use everything else from your car. It will all bolt right up to that new block. Buy new pistons, a camshaft and lifters, and timing chain. You can step up that cam for a little more fun. Then have your heads redone as well. If you go back with standard valve job and guides it wont cost much.
I had to change blocks on my 96 LT4, dropped valve destroyed one cylinder. I mean it blew it all to hell!! I could not find one close to save my life, which seemed insane at the time as I live in DFW where there are 4 million people. Getting one shipped then machined was going to cost way too much. I found a camaro LT1 block, read that 2 bolt main, and used it as the new bottom end. It was fully machined and ready to go and the guy just gave it to me to get it out of his way. It works good and the motor makes tons of power with my LT4 stuff bolted on and a slight increase in camshaft.
Be sure to use the right crank shaft key to properly set the crank trigger. Pull the one from your crank. The 96 setup is its own setup. I bought a couple of books on LT1/4 rebuild and read both before I did mine. Without them I would have been lost for sure. With them the build was very straight forward. It tells you how to set the opti to the cam and what the proper position is. Without the book telling me to set it 180 out from the initial crank to cam alignment I would have never been able to get my car started... I read that section several times to make sure I had it right.
