Has anyone here heard of using trans fluid in your motor?
A friend of mine put it in his rodeo's engine (did an oil change filter and all but with trans fluid) because he had a lifter ticking after running it for a few minutes the tick went away now he says in a couple of days he'll change it back to oil. He said that the fliud is high detergent and it will wash away the sluge in the motor. Is there any long term harm that can come from this or is it just a cheap way to clean out your engine?
Personally I would have just used a diesel oil, but I don't think there will be too much harm done. ATF has a lot of friction modifiers, I have no idea what that would do to a motor though.
I'm not recommending it, but when I was a kid my parents neighbor owned a used car lot (still does). He constantly had different cars in the driveway (where I caught the car bug).
He would bring the cars home & tinker with em' all the time, I specifically remember him putting ATF in the engine to quiet the lifters; I think he added something like two quarts & just left it in the engine. My dad thought he was crazy for doing it.
Dad used to tell me "He probably puts sawdust in the engine too" :jester
