After about 20 minutes of driving the speedometer will start reading random numbers that vary around 20 or 30 mph below and above what I am currently driving. I checked the plastic gears and they are in good condition. This also messes up my cruise control and the radio VSC. I read that it could be a connection somewhere or it could be the speed sensor which is hard to find. Where would be any connections in the wires to check? Any other ideas? Car has an automatic transmission.
What rear axle ratio? That would have much to do with the availability of the VSS.
The connector at the VSS is very common and an easy replace. If your car is a C68, what does that display for MPH? Cruise, VSC and display are all 'after' the ECM! Cut/splice or connector and do your own terminations might be a reasonable next move.
I had a similar problem with my 90, the speedometer would start jumping all over the place, it turned out to be the wire running from the ecm through the firewall to the connector under the passenger side dash, I ended up running a new wire from the ecm and bypassing the connector. That fixed the problem.
