I just got my reg renewal and I have to take my car to a test only station here in CA. I'm gonna put my 408 in next week but was wondering if anybody has made their car pass at the tailpipe with a similar engine. I have LPE headers and the smog pump and all the fittings, hoses, etc. I have the EGR valve and can put it back on just for looks I suppose as well as temporarily replace my gutted cat with a functional one. My cam is a Comp 12-418-8 .503/.510-224/230-112 C/L. I am wondering if I could have a chip burned to make the thing pass at the tailpipe since I have a guy who isn't too picky about the visual (headers without E.O.#)...anybody been through this?? Thanks, Evan.
I think your motor is going to be just fine. That cam is real similar to the Crane 222/230 that some forum members are running (assuming the events are close) and they pass just fine. I think the cat would be your only issue if you're tuned OK. It's the same cam I'm going to use in my 420 SR motor, and I fully expect to pass Calif. emissions. You may want to contact Jesse (ski_dwn_it), he does chips and has a 406 he's ready to put in his car. I'm sure he could help you out with a chip.
Here is the link to that Crane that passes emissions: http://www.cranecams.com/master/apps/chevy18.htm
He was in fresno as well, he had a 408, I dont remember what cam, I am betting a ZZ9 or the 219. He had no problems passing. I think he sold it to someone beach bum might know, and moved on to a C5.
Yeah, thats Chris..I haven't talked to him in awhile. I did some work on his car when I had a performance shop and I knew he had bought a C5 but didn't know what ever happened to his C4...It had a 219 cam in it. Good to know it passed too...thanks
Great..I did plan on getting a new cat and having it hooked up...sounds like you've been down the same road...good to know it should pass..Thanks again!!
Second option is to find a tech that looks other way. $150 is going price these days, hard to find though... But they are out there.
$250 if its a SMOG ONLY test required....
Chris's car actually DIDN'T pass...although I think with the right tuning, it COULD have (Definately not the visual though) He had it registered in Mariposa, CA, where Smog checks aren't required. If you know a guy that can *overlook* the visual..gimme his name, I do believe I need him for my truck :reddevil
Hey all the Ca Members here on this topic. So what if you tune it so the engine runs a little lean for that day, I would think by doing this would force less gasses to come out that dont let you pass? Maybe you could put two cats on it for the test, Maybe two could flow what you need?
I will be putting a BB in my Corvette in a couple of months and I dont know if when I get tested it will have to pass the requirements for a SB? Do they measure on % wise or at how much gets pushed out the tail pipe? If they do it by % wise then they cannot really tell if it was stroked or bored, can they?
Light: Its based on % of air coming out, measures however many "toxins". IF I stay in California for awhile I will be making my 87 smog legal, with an LT1 electric Smog pump, one CAT per bank (true duals), and a "SMOG test" tuning. Since I will have an aftermarket computer system I will be able to change to a Smog safe tune when I need too (as well as a freeway/milage tuning :D).
They cant tell engine size, but they can tell Big vs Small block if they know cars at all (some dont suprisingly). They (by law) look under the hood, check for smog pump, CATs, and signs of modifications, and if its a BY THE BOOK kinda place they will ask for CARB/OE #'s for the modified parts.
WHat if I use an intake thats smog legall, but then I use two TB's for it and I will have to make a special plate to mount the two to feed into on intake? WIll that be legall or will they want a OE# marking on it to see if it is legall, BUt I made it myself so that will not be allowed will it?

Re: 408 & CA emissions test (Light84vette)
I always thought it would be cool to build some type of unit that would pump all kinds of fresh air into the exhaust system, thereby diluting the engine exhaust gasses, and reducing your PPM all around. :chevy
