Default Fuel smell

1986 base coupe
About a year ago, i changed sll the vacuum hoses, fuel vapor canister. Now, when i drive the car, after about 5 minutes, the temp is 143, indicated, i get the fuel smell when sitting at a light a mile from home. (I never make that light).
no smell in 2 minutes when the light has turned green and traveled 50 feet. I never get the reoccurring smell until the next day,
So it’s canister purge.
occasionally, i get a whoosh st the gas cap, but like once every couple months. Purge valve is psrt of canister.
has anybody used a remote purge valve?

I would be more concerned if it takes 2 minutes to travel 50 feet as you have stated LOL

There is much confusion when it comes to the Evaporative emission control system and how it works. There is a purge control valve, a solenoid valve and a tank pressure control valve, parts places list them all as purge valves. Parameters for canister purge for my 86 (not sure if they are all set to factory settings) are enable at coolant temperature 65c, speed minimum of 10 mph, TPS over 3.53%. It should not purge sitting at a stop light. Pressure is held in the fuel tank by the tank pressure control valve when the throttle is closed. The tank pressure control valve and purge valve are connected to a ported vacuum source, which means no vacuum at idle. Check to see if all vacuum lines are correct.
I have a ls1 throttle body which has no ported vacuum source so I have everything connected to a manifold vacuum source. It still works ok and I've never had any fuel smell. Check your fuel pressure regulator and fuel lines, gas cap and any other possibilities.

If you are getting a woosh when you open the tank - it's building pressure. Most likely due to heating up, not a high heat up, but enough and the vent / e-vap

vent/ E-vap line is just under the elect conduit on the left of the filler

front of the tank = raised bong is for the T
is not working. I was getting the same thing and went to a vented tank cap, which was incorrect, but I'm also running a carb.

When the fuel pump died - in tank from who knows when the PO replaced it, I had to pull the tank as the PO had glued the sending unit in and stripped / broken the bolts. There is a vent line that goes from next to the filler neck to a T , then to the vapor canister. It's a metal line after the T and mine was clogged + rusted shut. It was clogged where the line comes down in front of the tank. Almost under the back of the drivers seat.

That may be an issue if everything else is working properly.

Default Vent

The light is 2 minutes, smarty pants.
The reason for me to jump into the evap stuff, was i was getting a gas smell after shutting off the car and getting out.
turns out at the driver seat under the car is a 3” long hose 1/4” dia.. Apparently they assembled the car with a forward vent line and a rear vent line and that hose deteriorated that connects them together.
i have a BBK throttle body, and it’s got the two vac lines for later L98’s. I switched the vac ports incase the first one was clogged somehow.
anyway, when i replaced the canister, i changed the vac lines one at a time, and double checked each line with the decal on top of the radiator.
i determined that i have a vacuum line leaking inside the car, and blocked off the line going through the firewall . It’s a 700R4.
all was well for months, now the gas smell.
the check valve in the fuel pump is leaking so in the near future i will have to take all that apart to change the pump.
maybe next week.
thanks to all that responded

Yes it is. Almost every screw broke. Getting your hand in there also sucks.

There has to be almost 30 screws to take out to get the tank out.

There is a write up / thread on the tank replacement. I added to that, as I figured out a way to easily replace the broken Screws / bolts..
