Default Clutch issue in ‘88 vette

Hey guys. So I recently received an 88 vette as a present from my wife. It has low mileage (85k) and is a dream to drive.

I took it out today and discovered my fuel sensor is inop as I ran out of fuel even though it is registering 1/4 tank.

I went and put fuel in it and it runs fine, however I noticed that it will only go into gear if the vehicle is turned off. Once I turn it on, pressing the clutch all the way to the floor, it still will not go into gear.

Any advice would be much appreciated. I am new to being a vette owner and as such, have very limited experience.

I will be taking it to a shop tomorrow most likely. Just want to know what I’m dealing with. Thanks.

It's most likely that you have some issues with your clutch hydraulic master cylinder / slave cylinder combination. Those are relatively easy to replace if you can find the right parts for your year. The issue is that once the hydraulics lose their seal effectiveness the system will bypass fluid, leak, and/or bring air into the system as well. A good shop should have no problem with this as long as they can source the correct parts.

The slave is usually the one that goes first. Note that it's currently out-of-stock at Zip.
