OBD1 scanner questions
i'm the owner of an 86 C4 and i would like to purchase an obd1 scanner to see the parameters, and also investigate why the MPG are not always shown (i read somewhere it's a good idea to check the data the ECU is sending to the dash).
i would like to kindly ask you some questions about the usage of this tool.
- does using this scanner stops the dash to show live information (eg MPG)?
- are all of them compatible with aldldroid? I found the aldlobd1u one but it seems it's not compatible with aldldroid or other android apps
- do you recommend a particular one?
Thank you!
I have this and it works with aldldroid for me with my '87. Getting it connected does take a particular method.
1320 will probably provide the best directions for the current version.

- 5 bytes at 160 baud are sent to the dash for instant/average mpg calculation, o/d indicator or cags indicator and shift light (year dependent).
- 25 bytes at 160 baud in ALDL mode (10 k resistor across A-B).
- 63 bytes (payload) at 8192 baud in Mode 1 which can be invoked from ALDL mode (2.) with appropriate hardware/software.
1986 cars (w-1986 $32 masked bins) in particular are difficult to get into Mode 1. Some tools are better than others, but no guarantee it will ever work. I have had limited success scanning 86 bins at 8192 baud only with DataCat. Other methods that I have tried have typically failed. Some users have reported that Diacom would also work for 1986 cars/1986 bins at 8192 baud.
The 1986 community has not been very vocal on this issue. My own car is a 1988, so I don't have a 1986 car available for testing, but I can test 1986 bins in my 88 car.
My suggestion for 1986 users is to try DataCat first (with a laptop). There are a few other work-arounds such as running a newer 87-88 or 89 bin in a 1986 car or running a specially modified 1986 bin. I have developed a few modified 86 bins specifically for this purpose, but I have received little to no feedback from 1986 owners to confirm that these will work reliably in 1986 cars.
