I noticed that my Change Oil light came on recently. I changed the oil about 3 months ago. I did not know to reset the light then, and since it was not on, I went on about life.
Now, the light is on. I followed the procedure - from this forum site, below:
1. Turn the key to RUN, but don’t start the engine.
2. Press ENG MET on the Trip Monitor. Then, within five seconds, press it again.
3. Within five seconds, press and hold GAUGES on the Trip’Monitor. The CHANGE OIL light should flash.
4. Hold the GAUGES button until the CHANGE OIL light stops flashing and goes out. This should take about ten seconds.
My Change Oil light never flashes. I counted twenty eight (28) attempts, and the Change Oil light did not flash, nor did it turn off. So, for those of you with this extended problem of the light not flashing, and if you fixed the problem, please share how you got the light to turn off.
RESETTING "CHANGE OIL" INDICATOR
The ~~Change Oil" indicator is reset by using a
sequence of Driver Information Center (DIC)
keypresses as follows:
1. Turn ignition ~~ON," but do not start engine.
(ALDL pin ~~G" should NOT be grounded.)
2. Press the ~~ENG/MET" button and release, then,
within 5 seconds, press it again.
3. Within 5 seconds of Step 2, press and hold the
~~RANGE" button. While the button is held, the
~~ChangeOil" indicator will flash.
4. Continue holding the ~~RANGE" button until the
~~ChangeOil" indicator stops flashing and goes out,
indicating successful completion of the reset cycle.
This should take about 10 seconds. If it does not
successfully reset, turn ignition ~~OFF" and repeat
the procedure from Step 1.
Since 'Oil Life' is calculated using the Oil Temp Sensor through the ECM & CCM maybe if you have a bad OTS then maybe that's expected. There's no direct reference to that in the FSM but maybe if you're familiar with using the DIC for ECM & CCM Data you set about checking that those functions work using the DIC. You have no CEL?
Does the 'RANGE' function correctly for other related operations?

Maybe 'Just Busted' ??
Thanks, WVZR-1,
One person who responded stated that I was pressing the wrong button....,.Really?
I am not familiar with the car's systems and have no working knowledge of those systems that you mentioned. So, let's take them one at a time and come up with a solution. Let's test the Oil Temperature Sensor and determine if it is the culprit. I will remove it and see if it was either disconnected, bad wire, or if the sensor is somehow damaged from a visual inspection.
One respondent suggested that I test the buttons to see if they are properly operating. I will monitor responses in the dash to affirm that pressing them causes a digital message in the dash. I will do that momentarily.

I don't believe I'd start with removing the OTS for a couple of reasons. I know of no one that seems to sell a 'quality' replacement. I believe you start with correct operation of the DIC for all of the other related functions. Do you have the FSM (Factory Service Manual)? It would be a wise buy just for maybe diagnosing this but for future maintenance of the car.
I just tested the buttons to see if they are working. This is the result:
When I press the ENG/MET, I get a reading in the dash. It changes from one measurement system to another
When I press the RANGE button, I see that the digital dash responds
When I press the INST/AVER, the digital dash responds
There is no change or message in the digital dash when I press the TRIP ODO
RESET: No digital reading when I press FUEL. The TRIP button zeros out the trip reading on the digital dash
My next two possible solutions is to Replace the sensor and to remove the monitor and clean the contacts. I plan to do this in the upcoming week.
My climate control buttons were not controlling the operations. I took it apart and cleaned the connections with alcohol and let air dry. I also used electrical cleaner aerosol. The buttons on the climate control now works. The light bulbs that illuminate the buttons still do not work. I plan to remove it, evaluate, clean, and replace it.

I want to start over, and see if we can find a simple solution.

Let's start from there and determine how to fix it - thanks
I believe the 'proper/correct' approach at this point would be if you have the FSM you visit the 8D Section, read/study/understand the 'how to's' and check for all DTC's, if any or what else may NOT function as it should. Maybe you have just a communications that cleaning 'might' fix OR maybe worse.
At this point I'd say it's all 'ON YOU'! Do you have the FSM?
I will check to see if this information is in the FSM that I got from you. I tabled this out of frustration after some guy on this forum told me that I pushed the 'wrong' button, and another guy stated that the 1990 did not have a 'Gauges' button.
I took the position that I (example) told someone that I went to the store and was unable to buy what I wanted, and the person asked me if I started the engine of my car to go to the store.
I am not looking for critics. I am looking for solutions.
I took the Trip Monitor out and apart. I cleaned the contacts and replaced the bulbs. Before this task, none of the bulbs worked, but, the buttons did work. today, March 30, 2022, and after cleaning the terminals in the Trip Monitor, neither the buttons work now, nor do the light bulbs work. The module seems to be dead.
