Hey everyone I am a new owner of a 1989 corvette with the 6 speed manual. I have recently been daily driving the corvette and this morning it refused to start out of the blue. based on some reading here I suspect the problem might be the VATS system but I wanted to ask for some advice on troubleshooting steps before going full bore on tearing things up. Here is the summary of what I am seeing.
- Turn key to first position, warning lights flash and all electrical systems turn on
- Warning lights all go away except for the security light, check engine light and battery light
- upon turning the key nothing happens except the anti lock warning turns on the display, no crank and the security warning stays solid.
Please let me know if there is anything else I should be looking at like the clutch switch! I want to get this girl back on the road.
First start with a wipe of the chip on the key, then wait about 15 minutes once VATs is activated it locks out and kills car for about 10 minutes, the extra time on the wait is to make sure has reset.
A dirty, worn key or cylinder can do what your describing
When you talk about waiting 15 minutes is this with the key in the ignition? the battery is good on charge.
key out is how I always did it. All it takes is a momentary loss of contact and the car goes into the VATs lockout, given the age and lack of history if it continues you may need to start with a key & cylinder replacement.
. After though if you have a couple keys pay attention which keys act up most one might be more worn or prone to act up
If you 'jumper' the CSS (Clutch Safety Switch) and it 'CRANKS' (always) you've found your issue. It's a tough reach many say but if you know where you're looking it's not that bad.
If you have the FSM 8A-201-4 would give you a pretty good idea of what you're looking for. The wire 'on the switch' are generally both black, at the connector for an '89 I believe you should have DK GRN/WHT & a PPL.
