S-K speed is who I contacted for info. I ended up having them do the rebuild, but they do have the parts available for it as well and I am sure they probably could tell you where/what manuals to get. IIRC my FSM didn't have all the updates that were made for a the unit to help with longevity.
Having the OD unit rebuilt is cool but I honestly wish I would've thrown down the $3700 for a 5 speed kit from SST
Having had five speeds in the past I'd never. I'd make a six speed work first. I considered it but after driving a friend's I was not what I'd call happy about the shifting quality for the price.
EDIT: not dissing SST, they offer the magnum. That is what id get.
If you do the job, keep in mind the sections are separate using ATF in one and regular 4-speed gear oil in the other. If the seal between the fluid leaks, you've got a big problem. Ask me how I know.
Can you tell some of the condition of the unit by opening up the cover. I thought I read somewhere that one of the biggest failures is a bearing somewhere.
There is a carrier bearing. I wouldnt count on a visual inspection showing anything. Mine looked fine on disassembly but made noise. If that carrier is failing itll only make noise in direct drive. In over drive I'll be quiet. The preload, or end play on that was altered for later years if I recall correct.
Edit for clarity: i dont believe the bearing is visible from the pan. Obviously if the fluid looks toast assume the worst but mine was always fine during changes.
