I'm working on rebuilding my LT-1, and noticed the bore shape of both my new FelPro and old head gaskets are not round. Both old and new head gaskets shape is identical... not round. AFIAK, the old head gasket is OEM... but I'd still like to understand this before assembling the engine.
Do it right or do it twice. :-)

Clearance as heads sometimes have this wider shape and it exposes more of the gasket to the combustion chamber, also can impead flow. Typical SBC head gasket feature.

So a universal sbc shape? Is there a better gasket to use?
On my AFR 210 heads it requires a 4.125 gasket. The bore is 4.030. Cometic makes a gasket to match the valve pockets. A good recent article on Dragzine discusses this.
