C4 turning off

C4 turning off
Well my dad has a 1984 c4 it is and autamatic and it has almost 73k miles on it, the problem is that when we are running into the issue that when he accelerates hard the rpms go high(obviosly) but when he brakes the rpm goes down and dosent stay at iddle rpm it just keeps going down till the car stalls and the check engine light turns on and then when he starts it again the check engine light goes off and the car runs fine and dosent stall again unless you accelerate and brake like that again. I mean when you brake after accelerating a bit the car is supposed to still run right? We really dont know whats going on with it because the check engine dosent stay on and we cant check whats the problem
