I know rough idle sounds like a simple issue that should be in the stickies, but I am finding nothing about this particular issue. We just recently bought our Vette. It is a 95 auto with 92000 miles. We realized it needed some work when we bought it but I am having trouble trying to figure out what to fix.
When the car starts, which it does easily, it idles rough. After a couple of minutes it will throw a code and the idle smooths out and the car runs great. I have done the paper clip to check the codes and it has an H44 code. After you drive it a little while the code goes away and the rough idle returns. At WOT it does kick out a lot of black smoke initially.
I know the code 44 refers to an oxygen sensor, not sure which one or how many there are on this car. I assume the car has set a lot so I was thinking a dirty injector which could be causing the sensor to trip. I am planning on pulling the injectors and having them professionally cleaned and flowed, any suggestions on a shop to work on the injectors? Anyone feel I am going the right direction on this issue or am I way off base. Thanks for all comments.
I believe there are two total, one each before the catalytic converters. I would replace them both along with the spark plugs. The black smoke is carbon build up in the exhaust system, either from being driven gingerly all of its life or a rich fuel condition from an O2 sensor being out of whack.
Thank you Yonker. Do you think I should have the injectors cleaned and flowed before I replace the sensors? Does anyone have a recommendation on a cold air system for this car? Do I have to have the car tuned after I put on a cold air system?
I had to the same problems when I bought my 94. The car had low miles on it because it never got drove.I changed the o2 sensors and plugs and wires.Turned out that with the alcohol in the fuels it gums up the gas filter and fuel line and injectors.I ran a ton of seafoam thru and it would start running a lot better.I then changed the filter and cleaned the injectors, it runs like new now. That alcohol in the fuel is wrecking the older cars you have to use some fuel additives to combat this crappy gas we have now.
