I'm not much of a "mechanic", but I'm trying to put together a plan for modding the 96. I'm going to put on a Corsa catback, cut lid, and K&N...
The little things aren't a problem. My question is, what do I start with on the engine? Do I go for an aftermarket intake? Heads? Cam?....etc.....
You dont need new heads or intake, just have the current ones ported and the valvetrain upgraded. (Ti retainers, better springs, 3 angle valve job, etc.)
Most popular cam is the LT4 hotcam, after that, all youll want is headers.
Well if HP is what youre after, its the best and most proven way to go.
But if youd rather hold off on that engine stuff, you can go with a 2600-2800 Stall Torque Convertor and 3.54/3.73 gears. Actually, if youre more concerned with how quick the car is (ET in the 1/4mi), those will give you great gains.

I've been going back and forth on the gears...Honestly, I'm not crazy about letting someone dig into my engine (I have yet to find someone in AL that I trust to do it). :nopity
Another plan would be - have patience and gather all the info you can on proven setups. Then with the info you can decide which way you want to go depending on what you expect out of your car - Heads, cam, gears, etc.
It took me 2 years to decide how I wanted to mod my car. This is an ongoing fever that never ends.
