I agree with BBA that it sould not be normal but i disagree that it's usually a defective tranny pack. Mine has the exact same symptoms now that it did pre rebuild. I personally watched the rebulild the 2nd time and everything is new and put together properly. I think alot of the noise we hear may be rear-end noises. I'm not sure but i've driven many vettes near this model year and without exaggerating over 90% had the clunk. It annoys the hell outta me and makes me wanna leave it in OD but i drive with it in D anyway unless i am going over 50 for any length of time. JMHO.
After I had my trans out to install a second converter (after 100K on the rebuild) I developed a clunk like yall are mentioning. It didn't occur right away........it came after a couple hundred miles. I put it on my rack and looked it over and found that the bolts to the torque beam had loosened on the rear end.
Another thing as was mentioned earlier is if the differential pinion gears (spider gears) are loose. They will allow some "slap".

The difference is something a lot of tranny guys won't even know. They must measure the 2-4 band clearance and install the correct pin to keep it tight, and the clutch packs must have verry little clearance, usually, if the head of a dime will slip between the elements, but not a nickel, it's just right and will shift smoothly...too loose and bang shifting occurs.
If it only does it in D and not 3rd it sounds to me like your TC is staying locked up http://www.700r4.com Im not an expet but contact this guy I think he is the best thier is with GM OD transmisions he is great he has helped me several times.
RESPONSE FOR ALL WHO ARE CONCERNED:
I contacted the above and received a prompt courteous reply. When the car is in gear and not in OD this klunk will happen, due to the shift kit and the faster shift time.
So for those of us who have this happening - fagataboutit.
The overrun clutches and sprag are applied in the "D", "2", "1" position and are not on in the "OD" position, this would account for clunk and you can solve this by putting in the Trans-Go Junior Shift kit, or do the 2-4 band adjustment as per their Trans-Go Junior Shift kit instructions. If you have questions on this let me know?
