Default Front fender wells — evolution

Noticed that the front fender wells have a lot more room for turning with a wide tire on the 1989 compared to the 1986… anyone know the details on the differences between the years?

Parting out the 1989 and unfortunately I sold the RH front fender/wheel well liner. May meed to get it back and also match the top bolted to the hood?

'87 and earlier are different - all eight pieces VS the later. I don't believe you can mix them, you could 'maybe/but I doubt' use all 8 pieces of the later for an '87 or earlier but no reason for me to attempt!

Any thoughts on removing the forward ones and tops altogether (part of forward liner it is the flat bottom to remain in place) with perhaps the rear sections opened up to the compartment/vent behind? Perhaps with a set of louvered vents on top of the wheel arch?

car for track and autocross, no commuting

My tops have been off for decades. Drag racing only.

Are you sure about that? I've never heard of an early C4 that can't use its full turning radius with 11" wheels and 315 tires up front as long as you get the offset correct. That's no different than an 88-96 C4: it can do the same thing, but the offset requirements are different. The second picture in your first post just looks like it has a bunch of poke, and/or the wheel/tire combo is a different width.
