Default 1992 Charging issues

I have a 1992 coupe. I just had the a/c converted to R134-A, replaced the compressor and lines. A/C is blowing cold! I also had a flow master exhaust adjusted - tailpipe was touching the body. However when I picked it up on the way home about 10 minutes, I noticed smoke coming from between the back of the engine and the firewall, but it stopped in about 15. I attributed it to grease or oil on the exhaust. Now is my real problem - the charging system would charge and then stop, then charge multiple times. On about a 20 minute drive it quit charging completely and the battery was almost dead - down to 9 volts - the a/c stopped working. I thought that was caused by the low voltage. I disconnected the battery cable and the engine died. The next day, I started it and the voltage gauge read 14.8 volts and the A/C worked fine. I drove it about 2 miles and it quit charging again. I thought it was the alternator so I took it to Advance where it tested good. The employee there recommended a voltage regulator, but I can’t find it. I know some are in the alternator, but they talked like this was external. Any thoughts????

Try cleaning all the battery cables, wire to alternator, grounds, wires to starter, etc. Check all the connections and wires to make sure they aren't grounding out.
