I want to change my 89 D36 rear end fluid. I'm trying to figure how much I need to buy. I already picked up the GM posi additive and 1 quart of synthetic. I want to make sure I have enough fluid. How many quarts does it take? I have heard anywhere from 1 to 3 quarts with the additive. I can't believe the manual doesn't reference the capacity anywhere.
Thanks for your help!
John
If the D36 and D44 are the same then it take 1.2 quarts if memory serves me. (sometimes its been knows to fail on me though) I'm sure someone else will confirm/ prove me worng on this
The older Chevy 10 and 12 bolt rear-ends had a fill hole designed so when the fluid starts to overflow out the hole, it was full. Maybe the Dana's have something like this too. FWIW.
I just put a new diff in mine I bought 2 bottles of gear lube and the GM additive.. took under 2 quarts plus the additive I put that infirst.. just fill it till it comes out the fill hole..

Mobil 1 Synthetic doesn't require a posi lube. In fact, the two HATE each other. They will not touch, the posi lube floats on the surface and just beads if you try to mix the two together.
You're not going to hurt anything by running both, but it is unneccessary. I doubt that the posi lube will stand up to heat as well as the Mobil 1 if you are going to race the car, but that'd be the only downside to running both.
