When driving around town, under 45mph, I like the peppy feeling of D, but often leave it in OD, because of the frequent downshifting at lights and the hard clunky downshift from 2nd to 1st. I know several of you guys have mentioned that you all have the same hard downshift, but is my tranny going to be OK if I do this all the time?
I have the same clunck and it is also only in D and not OD but mine is when the car almost stops going from 2nd to 1st. Makes me more tenative to drive it in D around town but i do it anyway. I just had the entire tranny redone and it still does it but it did it well before the rebuild as well. I am starting to think it has nothing to do with the tranny or is normal. Any my rule of thumb is under 50 MPH it's and D. Over 50 i put it in OD
And I thought it was because of the trick trans. I have in my car. Always drive in D in stop and go, OD on the highway. Hurts mileage but I hope I am saving the trans. :iagree:

I'm in the exact same situation. My car has always clunked on the 2-1 downshift when in "D" and I also just had my trans rebuilt and it still clunks.
I don't worry about it too much as I've never had any other problems, but it is a bit annoying.
I bought a kit from bowtie overdrives http://www.700r4.com and My TC only locks up in 4th and unlocks as soon as I tap the brakes the CPU controls nothing in my transmision and I do not have the clunking problem.

Re: When do you use OD? (castivers)
Only use OD when you will be over 45-50 mph. Driving in OD around town is very hard on the tranny because it is constantly shifting while searching for the correct gear. The effect on mileage is minimal under 50 mph. Keep it in D around town and your tranny will thank you.
I have 2.59's - No Clunk - and very rarely put it in OD except over 60mph for more than a few miles. My tack hardly goes over 2K in "D" at 58mph, unless I punch it and downshift. :D I save OD for the Interstate or over 60 runs on the way to work.
I only use OD when I'm highway crusing otherwise it seems to hunt to much and thats anoying. I have the clunk from 2nd to 1st and from what I've heard on the forum thats normal. Put it this way, 61k and no tranny problems. :)
Maybe I have just been fortunate or lucky, but the only time I ever get out of OD is when I am on a twisty road driving aggressively. The remainder of the time, I remain in OD and always have. I have 139,000 miles on her now, with no problems so far... :chevy
I don't have to but I only use OD on dry pavement when going over 50mph or over 60 on wet pavement. I had the lock-up changed on the chip to 48mph so I could drive around under 45mph in OD w/o the tq convertor engaging/disengage. I think the stock setting was 42 mph.
Since the pavement being under 40 degrees is like wet pavement, I have been driving in D quite often lately. I glanced down at the tach, which I barely ever do, and noticed the upshift light was on. I don't see that one too often. :)

OD all the time for me. 152k miles and still leaking... Oh that's not a good thing is it. Engine and tranny are getting a complete overhaul this month so maybe I'll be a little nicer afterwards.
