Has anyone ever placed( Probably wont just go in) a Viper V-10 engine in a Corvette? Just wondering, No dont start this pissing contest about how Vipers suck and this and that and yada yada yada, I'm just curious if anyone has ever done it, Maybe? ;) BEsides were all american cars, right? I'm not asking if anyone put a Ferrari V-8 in a Vette, American with American :flag ;)
Yeah maybe not, B/c the bore on a V-10 is 4inches and compared to a SB it has an extra cylinder so thats like a 5inch extra length, Owell that would surprise a lot of people if that was ever done.
By the Way do you have a site to that V-8 Hemi Vette? Also I think the viper engine is almst 700lbs
Dont HEMIS cost big, I mean BIG $$$$$ Yeah you cant get them for less than twice the price of a Crate LS1---------10G's Plus. And thats only a 427 or 428 or whatever it is Hemi, if you want that 528 then you got to shell out 15g's+ for that.
Why not just go V-10 for 15,000 and you got a good 500hp. Then you could bore and stroke it to 555CID-700hp and then SC it or put it on some sissy gas to get to kilo or even more than KILO hp figures. :yesnod: :yesnod:
>> I don't think Vipers suck. But I think the V-10 in a vette idea
>> is not do-able.
Wrongo - actually, it's been done and some time ago at that!
There was an article in Vette, I think, about the installation of a V10-V12 built with a custom block and Chevy innards. Around the same time, an article about a similar swap into a Chevy truck appeared.
IIRC - the frame and front bodywork of the C4 Vette were extended to accomodate the additional length of the engine.
Since I never throw anything out, I must now spend the rest of the night searching for the magazine to prove that I am not just pulling your chain. I'll be back with details when I find it.
Here we go:
VETTE - July 1992 (yes, 10 1/2 years ago!)
pg 36 'Corvette ZR-12, Twelve Cylinders and an attitude'
by Jim Campisano
Project is a development exercise for Corvette Group. Jim
Minneker, Corvette Powertrain Systems Mgr is quoted by
author.
Engine is a 12 cyl built by Ryan Falconer Industries (Salinas, Ca).
- 600 ci (based on SB Chevy, accepts all accessories)
- 665hp@5500 690lb/ft@4500 Redline-8500
- 8.8 inches longer than a L98
Car is a '89 ZR-1 prototype (150k mi on the clock)
- Sportsfab (Wixom, Mi) added 8" after the front wheels
and lengthened the body
With everything we know now about how the future of
Corvette was hanging in the balance during the e-90's
it is no surprise that production didn't go ahead. Expected
price was pegged at well beyond the 70k of the ZR-1.
Regards
I already know about the V-12, thats a company out of Salinas CA that makes Aircraft V-12's and marine and auto V-12's that big. They are called Ryan Falconer engines. Anyway I want to know if a V-10 Viper engine has ever been fitted? Not V-12, the engine cost as much as a ZR-1-$60K, I'm looking for a 15K Engine like Viper V-10 :yesnod:
I'm pretty sure I will go Big Block way before I think of still using a SB. ANyway my 84 doesnt weigh as much as the other C4's. It still got a stereo 500watt system, a/c everything stock and with 1/4 tank it was 2998lbs. So I think even with a V-10 it will be a whole lot lighter than most other C4's. Anyway I dont think it would be 30K. Even if the engine is 5inches longer than the SB it still can fit almost. If the BB is only 2 inches longer and it fits( Just moves up) then V-10 can go 3 inches back. They can reccess the Firewall back 3 inches to make it fit. Then they would have to use a shorter transmission to fit in the tunnel,
WHat do you guys think Do I just like the V-10 too much and the Corvette to mix the two or is this engine swap just not impossible without a Chasiss stretch? :D
slalom, you are correct...i have a book on the corvette that has the V12 C4 in it. they stretched the front of the car nearly 10 inches, and it had chrome sidepipes. if i had a scanner id send the pics to ya!
