Hi everyone, I am going to starting a full track build, mainly for champcar, over the next year or so. The starting point is an 89 coupe 6spd Z51 & FX3 car. My first question involves driver safety. The largest driver is 6'3 and the smallest is 5'10, so seat sliders will probably be involved. What are seat options have people used in builds before? Currently looking at the momo daytona xxl and sparco evo xl. If you have pics of seats installed with roll cage that would be great. Thanks
Seats… tried quite a few things and this is what I ended up with: bolted down 1/8” aluminum alloy plates to the seat base studs sticking through, then Corbeau adjustable sliders (spaced out a little wider to fit seat mounts) bolted to the plate and also Kirkey seat mounts and 65 series Kirkey (adjustable back in a low position for ceiling clearance).
Technically the adjustable sliders will better fit a Corbeau seat and brackets, but this is the direction I chose. Not much room in the car for seats, so it’s important to get them centered. Adjustable rail handles not shown, but basically I cut the rod right in the middle and put a tube over it. Works great and locks excellent, and it’s low profile.
I'll just add that if your car has the fancy seats, the base seats are probably lower and lot lighter. If used with the "glass" top instead of the padded opaque top, you might have enough headroom as is. I'm 6'2 and had room in my 96 with a helmet on that way...but just barely. You could install a harness bar and safely use a 4-point harness that way. OTOH, if this is going to be a track-only car (no street use), then the above-mentioned race seats are a better option: more support, proper holes for a 5-point harness, etc. Just be careful choosing, because some aftermarket seat/slider setups end giving less headroom than stock!
