I am thinking about getting a Y pipe without the pre-cats (for an 1987, L98) in hopes to gain a better sound and give a slight performance increase. Muffler delete has already been done by previous owner, everything else is stock. As far as taking off the Y pipe itself, I am having trouble finding some info on a DIY procedure.
Is it as simple as unbolting it from the main cat and the front? The 02 sensors are there as well I believe, would this be a good time to replace them?
The O2 sensor (only 1, drivers side) may be difficult to get loose, usually it needs to be warmed up to break free. If its original, would not hurt to replace with a new one.
A heated, 3-wire, O2 is not necessary in this case since the sensor is going to be basically in the same position in the catless Y and you're keeping the manifolds and main cat.
Okay great! That's good to hear. If the O2 sensor itself wont come off the old Y pipe, doesn't it have a connector running above it? Would I just be able to ignore taking it off the old pipe and install a new one in the new Y pipe?
