This is on my 160k, 85 Z51. The shocks appear to me to be oem. The upper bolt on the rear shocks are what I would describe as "rust welded" to the sleeve they go into. I tried an air hammer to drive it out but no go. A saws all with a Milwaukee "Torch" 18 tpi didn't touch it. I spoke to 2 exhaust shops and a repair shop. They didn't want to attempt using heat. Heat is the best solution I see. Not doing it in my drive. I'm going to speak with a couple of other shops. I have one more attempt to try. Using a 3 or 4 inch cutoff tool. Shocks are still mounted so car isn't disabled. What solutions have or can you come up with?
Checking basics, do you have the rear arm jacked up just-so to relieve tension on the shock? Is the leaf spring dismounted from the arm?
My upper shock bolt wasn't rusted, but it took a bit of adjustment on the arm jack to get it to come out and still had to use a ratchet to get it out via its threads at times. I usually disconnect the spring as that's a lot of scary force on the arm.
I usually just use a 4 or 4.5" cutoff wheel on an angle grinder to cut through the bolts. I haven't tried them yet, but I've heard the Diablo Steel Demon sawzall blades are really good.
