it's probably the pump....the best way (that i found) to tell is to warm up the car and get the pump pumping, shut it down, then jack it up and shine a flashlight from the underside.......you should be able to tell right away where it is coming from.
it's no fun to change....took me 10 hours spread across 3 days and a LOT of frustration to change it but i got it done!!!! :smash:
Your guess that it is the water pump is probably a good one. Try looking for coolant leaking from the pump area with the engine running, and at operating temperature. You might place a newspaper on the floor, under the water pump, to display any leakage.
If you had a leak in the exhaust head gasket, your operating temperature would be excessive, and your coolant level would drop rapidly.
If you can drive it, take it to a shop for a pressure test on the cooling system. That should show the location of the leak if you can't find it any other way.
Thanks, I needed that. I changed my 85's pump last week end. I hadn't turned any serious wrenches in years and really felt numb when it took me three hours to remove the old pump and another five to install the new one and top off the coolant. Maybe I didn't do so bad after all. :D
