Below is a picture of my glove box door and it won't open. I can lock and unlock it with the key. Both tabs left and right need to be squeezed to open it. The left tab seems to work normally but the right tab is stuck in the pushed in mode. When I put the key in and lock it the left and right tabs stick out as usual. When I unlock it and press the tabs in the left tab seems to work ok but the right tab sticks and the door won't open. I am able to look inside the glove box door and I can see there is nothing like napkins stuck in the latch. I've tried finessing it open to no avail. Is there any way to get this open without damaging it? Has anyone drilled the lock out and did that work?
A glove box door for any year S10, Blazer or GMC S-series (through probably '94) uses the same lock housing. I'd try a 'pick and pull' to get a door to experiment with. Drilling yours destroys the cylinder which is very easy to remove if you had the door opened. If you drill you'll need the housing and also then a cylinder.
I got the glove box door open. I was able to pry the door open and hold it open with some felt pads and see the two locking tabs inside under where the key goes in. The outside tab that is pressed actually works the opposite locking tab inside the glove box. So pressing the right outside tabs works the left locking inside tab. The left locking tab was completely stuck in the locked mode so I used a (screwdriver+hammer) to bend the bracket and locking tab to open the door. I didn't damage the key cylinder. I will try to re-use my old key cylinder and put it in the used glove box door assembly I will buy. Thanks for your help.
If there's no issues with your glove box door I wouldn't think there's a need to buy another. Much might depend on expense but maybe just the actual lock housing from either a J/Y S10 or maybe even new. The expense of a '90 - '93 Corvette might be excessive.
I had the same issue a month ago on my 92. I was able to pry the cover off the outside of latch and take it apart. I found a new OEM latch on eBay by searching the part number. These latches were used on several GM vehicles of that era. Swapped over the lock cylinder and it’s good as new.
