I am just not understanding the basics here. I bought the G1 memory adapter from Moates. I see on tuning sites (forums I haven't registered on...yet) that this is all you need to use your burned chip on your pcm. However, I don't get it. This looks like it mounts to the chip, not the car. How does this G1 adapter mount to the PCM? The brown part is what plugs into the PCM. The green part is the G1 (this one looks slightly different, but very similar).
Do I leave the stock chip in or just the 6 pin chip? How is this supposed to fit in my PCM? Also, not sure on the orientation. There are less pins on the Moates than on the original.
The pic posted is the moates adapter.
Bulky but much less work to do.

As pictured left side 32 pins your factory PROM
Seats in. Your PROM orientation 2 peep holes
1 side you can see the soldered in 28pin eprom = proprietary UV equipment to burn. If the silver sticker is removed that chip is volnerable to UV light erasing or damaging the info.
Other side two chips fuel map B.U. and
Equals the right side the 38 pins plug into the moats adapter.
The adapter is purposely bypassing the PROMS eprom. Only reading the fuel map.
The left side of the moates adapter has a 28 pin socket to install a spare chip.. the example pictured coincidentally is a 28 pin eprom.
Typically you purchase 28pin Atmel 256 EEproms = NON volatile voltage unlimited erase/ read/ write.
Both style chips have a half circle to indentify the "front" the left side front is pin 1
Are you saying your chip is a "26" pin?
Or the moates adapter is a 26 pin ic socket.
The moates adapter actually fits inside your "ECU" as pictured. PCM is for newer cars 94 up.

You can get more complicated and purchase 512 faster, larger EEproms split the start and burn. This method is for the advanced.
I think that helps. So does the white chip that was in the prom not get used? The Moates g1 only takes 1 28 pin chip. I thought it was 16 pins on each side but it's 14. Or do I leave the white 8 pin in the prom?

Uhhh...I hope in your other post you didn't take anything apart on your original memcal. The G1 bypasses the original PROM and reuses the netres. If you go to Moates G1 website, there's a bunch support links that should help you along. Here's couple of pics that show orientation in a '86-'89 ECM followed by '90-'93.
I tore it apart. 0 patience on my part. So do both factory chips stay in and then use another chip in the g1? I figured the black factory chip comes out for the burner and to read it.

Yup...^^^first pic I posted has the G1 with a zero insertion force socket on it. That lever allows you to lock and release the chip (PROM) for erase/burn/read etc.
