My car always starts, but sometimes it clicks and nothing happens, and then I have to release the ignition and turn it again and then it fires. When it DOESN'T start, the battery gauge never drops, so there is no drain on it when it's not cranking. Also, it's a 6spd, and I don't even have to release the clutch between start attempts. It happens both when it's cold and hot. Any help would be much appreciated. Please help me track this down (no service lights or trouble codes, car is stock with 43,000 miles) Thanks
Re: Starting Problem 1995 Corvette 6spd (Room4Two)
Have the same problem. Turns over just once, like the battery is dead. But then on the second try it fires right up just fine. Cold or hot. Doesn't happen all the time. Was thinking the starter or the battery. Since it always starts haven't done any investigation yet. Anybody solved this one?
Re: Starting Problem 1995 Corvette 6spd (Room4Two)
I had this problem on my 94 6 spd with about 80,000 miles . Replaced starter ,never happened again. Mechanic said as these starters get old, the motor brushes start sticking or dragging, thus causing momentary malfunction but not always. Recommend starteer replacement.
Re: Starting Problem 1995 Corvette 6spd (Room4Two)
Check your battery, my guess is you'll find that the terminals are going to fall off. This has happened to many C4 owners, if it's an AC Delco battery, then it's for sure.
Re: Starting Problem 1995 Corvette 6spd (Room4Two)
Sounds like a starter with a bad winding. A bad winding on the starter would give these symtoms. The problem will be intermitant. If the starter stops on the bad winding it won't start if fall on a good part of the comutator it will start just fine. Replace the starter.
Re: Starting Problem 1995 Corvette 6spd (6 speed Sid)
Well, leave it to the Forum. I was just about to go looking for info on this problem and here's a posting. I have a '94 6spd with similar problems. Occasionally, it will click and do nothing, but then start right up on the 2nd or 3rd try. I'd say it has symptoms of both battery and starter problems. Unfortunately, it's tough to repeat. It seems to occur randomly. I'm gonna try cleaning my battery contacts first. If that doesn't work, I'll look into replacing the starter. Anyone know how big of a job this is? How hard is it do yourself vs how much is the dealer gonna take me for?
