I overheated & locked up the engine in my 85 last year. I was working on the replacement engine (which came out of another 85 vette) when one of the valve covers cracked. I still have the valve covers from my original engine but they look like they might be damaged from the heat.
This one looks worse than the other one (coincidentally it's also the one that I need), it looks like the paint/coating has bubbled under.
Are these salvageable? If so, is there anything I can do to clean them up?

Just have them media blasted and then powder coated. Did that to my 84 covers and turned out great!
I had one of mine blasted but skipped the powder coating, just polished the raw aluminum with some Flitz polish. Can it be used that way or does it need the coating for heat protection?

Did they come painted/coated from the factory or are they just polished metal?
They're painted, from what I've heard getting the paint off is tricky. Either aircraft paint stripper or bead blasting. The casting from factory is poor too, so they covered it up with the paint. I'm going to work on my valve covers soon, so I looked this stuff up beforehand. If you try smoothing out the bare metal, be wary of a potential magnesium fire.
