Team,
Apologies for my last post about electrical problems. I realized how dumb it was as soon as I posted it. Anyway, my 85 rums pretty good. Fast and responsive. I am in the Army, so the vette sits for long periods. I have noticed a small amount of smoke when I step on the throttle. There is a puff and then it goes away. Seems to be gone once the car was up. I have good compression in all 8 cylinders. Around 152psi.
The car is almost 40 years old. Based on experience, would anyone here be going into the motor to rebuild pistons, etc. Plugs are not fouled when I pull them. I have rebuilt the entire fuel delivery system and all of the gaskets for the air intake. I would really like to know what anyone out there thinks about this. Thanks

How many miles are on the car, if under 100K I wouldn't sweat anything but Valve Seals. Odds are your seals have gone hard and oil is sliding down the Valves, So a set of stem Seals.
There are 133k on the car. Like I said it is running well otherwise. My guess is that once it warms up and metals expand it gets better. Thanks for the advice. Valve seals seem pretty simple. I have never rebuilt a motor, only done some minor work on the top end in the past. This seems a similar level of maintenance.
Get a good set of Umbria style valve Seals, if you're mostly handy with a wrench you can do it give you tube a quick look for valve seal replacement for small block chevy to get a feel of the job.

thanks, I do all
of my own work. Learning a lot. YouTube as saved my *** many times. I was just looking up valve seals and they are not expensive. Plus I am assume a valve job will need to be done once they are installed to set the proper clearance. When I retire from the Army in 24 I plan on pulling the engine and really going to Vette school in my garage.
Valve adjustment is a must because you will remove the rockers, Valve Job is a Whole next Opp. If you plan on pulling it in 24 months as a retirement project and if it's a puff now and then I would let it Puff and take care of with engine rebuild in future. Don't get me wrong if it's a smelly smoker Jump on it

just a bit now, if it gets worse I will pull the valve covers and get to work. Seems straightforward and not any tougher than the work I have done so far. It will be new so I will take my time and mark down part as I remove them for easier reinstall. Thanks again
